Microsoft's Free TokenEconomizer Tool Cuts AI Coding Costs by Up to 31%
Microsoft and UC Berkeley researchers release TokenEconomizer, a free tool that reduces AI coding assistant costs by up to 31% by eliminating redundant token usage.

Researchers from Microsoft and the University of California, Berkeley, have unveiled a free tool called TokenEconomizer that can reduce the cost of using AI coding assistants by up to 31%. The tool is compatible with popular assistants such as Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, GitHub Copilot CLI, and Pi, and is now publicly available for developers to use without any software fees.
AI coding assistants rely on tokens to process instructions, read code, and complete tasks. Developers pay for these tokens when using paid AI services. However, the researchers found that assistants often waste tokens by repeating work, using unnecessary tools, and retrying the same failed solutions multiple times. For example, an assistant might repeatedly search for the same file or instructions even though it had already found them in an earlier task.
TokenEconomizer addresses this inefficiency by remembering useful information from previous sessions and applying three key methods to reduce unnecessary work. First, it retains important project details, such as the commands needed to test the code, preventing the assistant from searching for the same information again. Second, it removes tools that are not needed for a particular task, reducing the amount of information the AI must process. Third, it detects when the assistant keeps making the same mistakes and encourages it to try a different approach or stop wasting resources.
In tests involving 277 coding tasks, TokenEconomizer reduced costs by 18.4% to 30.9% while maintaining similar or better results in most cases. The tool's ability to cut costs without compromising output quality makes it an attractive option for developers looking to optimize their use of AI coding assistants.
The public release of TokenEconomizer underscores the growing focus on efficiency in AI-assisted development. As AI coding tools become more prevalent, solutions that reduce operational costs and improve resource utilization are likely to gain traction among developers and organizations alike.
