The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is set to launch rehabilitation work on around 140 additional roads across the city within the coming days, part of a development programme worth about Rs13 billion, the corporation announced on Monday.

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab said the tendering process for the projects has been completed and work orders will be issued within two to three days, with construction expected to get underway by the end of this week. He was speaking at a press conference at the KMC Head Office.

According to the mayor, the road rehabilitation schemes will span all seven districts of Karachi and will be carried out without political discrimination. The new work will add to a number of road improvement projects that are already in progress across the metropolis.

Wahab said the local government had set aside between Rs68 billion and Rs70 billion for development projects at the start of the current financial year and was working to meet those commitments. He added that the KMC was taking practical measures to upgrade the city's infrastructure and public services rather than citing limited powers and resources as a reason for inaction.

The corporation plans to use the Rs13 billion allocation to improve road conditions and address infrastructure problems in various parts of Karachi. The upcoming phase is expected to expand the reach of ongoing improvement efforts to more neighbourhoods across the city.
