Punjab Government Renames GC University Faisalabad Under New University Amendment Act
The Higher Education Department has notified revised names for several public sector universities, with GC University Faisalabad now officially known as Government College, Faisalabad.

The Higher Education Department of Punjab has issued a notification revising the official names of several public sector universities across the province, including Government College University Faisalabad, which will now be formally referred to as Government College, Faisalabad. The change removes the word "University" from the institution's official title.
According to the notification dated October 23, 2026, the revisions stem from the Public Sector Universities (Amendment) Act, 2026, which the provincial government published in the Punjab Gazette (Extraordinary) on May 6, 2026. Vice chancellors and rectors of both public and private sector universities were informed of the updated designations.
The department has directed the affected institutions to take further necessary action in line with the amended legislation. Officials indicated that the revision applies only to the official name of the institution, while its mandate, academic functions and role in higher education remain unchanged.
The amendment affects multiple public sector universities in the province, though the notification focuses on the revised nomenclature for each institution. The move is administrative in nature and is expected to standardize how these institutions are officially identified in government records and correspondence.
Students and faculty at the affected institutions are unlikely to see any immediate change in academic operations, admissions or degree programs. The department has asked university administrations to align their official documentation with the revised names as required under the amended law.
