Pakistan's stock market is witnessing a remarkable expansion in retail participation, with the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) adding 26,843 investor accounts in October 2026 alone. According to data shared by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), the total investor base has now crossed 683,000, reflecting growth of nearly 50 percent over the past ten months. More than 200,000 investors joined the market during 2026, underscoring a broad shift toward equity investment among ordinary Pakistanis.
Young investors are at the forefront of this trend. Individuals aged 18 to 30 opened 14,634 accounts in October, representing 55 percent of all new registrations for the month. Small investors made up 77 percent of October's additions, highlighting that the growth is being driven primarily by individual retail participants rather than large institutional players. Investors aged 31 to 45 opened a further 9,290 accounts, while 801 accounts belonged to large investors and 42 were corporate registrations.
The gender split in new registrations remains wide. Men opened 22,878 accounts, or 85 percent of the total, while women opened 3,923 accounts, accounting for 15 percent. On a regional basis, Punjab recorded the highest number of new accounts at 14,891, followed by Sindh with 7,643 and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 1,894. Islamabad added 1,419 accounts, while Balochistan and Azad Kashmir recorded 370 and 340 respectively. Gilgit-Baltistan contributed 150 accounts, and overseas investors opened another 136.
The Pakistan Mercantile Exchange also saw growth, adding 1,077 accounts in October to bring its total investor base to 61,915. The SECP noted that opening an investment account at the PSX has become simpler, and that 13 public offerings took place on the country's stock market during 2026. SECP Chairman Dr. Kabir Sidhu said the regulator is focused on making investing easier and safer while protecting investor rights, stressing that transparency and effective market supervision are essential to sustaining confidence.
The regulator is running a nationwide awareness campaign aimed at expanding Pakistan's stock market investor base to 2.5 million. Market performance has reinforced the appeal of equities, with the KSE-100 Index delivering a 43.5 percent return during fiscal year 2025-26, according to SECP data. The combination of strong returns, easier account opening and sustained outreach appears to be drawing a new generation of Pakistanis into the capital markets.
