PTI-Authorities Talks See No Progress Ahead of Islamabad March

Negotiations between the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and government authorities regarding PTI’s planned march towards Islamabad on September 27 have ended without any breakthrough, according to sources familiar with the discussions.

The recent talks focused on the possibility of de-escalating tensions if PTI agreed to cancel its planned mobilisation and offered assurances against organizing future sit-ins, road blockades, or confrontations with law enforcement agencies. In exchange, authorities reportedly suggested that concessions could be made related to PTI founder Imran Khan and his family, including the potential transfer of Bushra Bibi to Bani Gala, medical treatment arrangements for Khan, and more regular visitation opportunities.

However, these proposed concessions were conditional upon an understanding that facilities provided to Khan and his wife would not be used for any political activities. Authorities indicated that while meetings with Khan could be arranged according to rules, political mobilisation or activity from within prison would not be permitted, sources said.

Despite these discussions, a deep lack of trust between the two sides prevented any agreement. Sources have also noted that PTI’s mobilisation strategy for September 27 may primarily involve supporters from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), rather than a nationwide protest as described in public statements.

PTI sources suggest that the main mobilisation will stem from KP, as stricter restrictions and administrative pressure are in place in Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan. Workers in these provinces have largely been directed to hold protests locally, although those in Punjab areas bordering KP may coordinate with the KP campaign.

No specific instructions have been issued to PTI’s Islamabad wing to organise a large-scale procession from within the city, with the main contingent expected from KP depending on the evolving situation.

Despite the stalled talks, PTI leaders have reaffirmed their plan to proceed with the Islamabad march, which they describe as part of the effort to secure the release of Imran Khan and advance their political demands. KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has stated that the planned date remains unchanged. Meanwhile, the government has stated that it will enforce the law during any protest action.
