Russell Brand Convicted of Rape and Sexual Assault in UK Court, Faces Life in Prison
Actor and comedian Russell Brand has been found guilty of rape and three counts of sexual assault against four women, and was taken into custody to await sentencing.

Actor and comedian Russell Brand was convicted on Thursday by a London jury of rape and sexual assault involving four women, and was immediately taken into custody. The 51-year-old star of films such as 'Get Him to the Greek' was found guilty at Southwark Crown Court on one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. He was acquitted on two other rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault related to allegations from three additional women.
Brand appeared motionless and expressionless as the verdict was read. As he left the courtroom, he reportedly mouthed to his lawyer, 'I'm good. I'm good,' according to the BBC. He faces up to life in prison when sentenced on Monday. Judge Joel Bennathan ordered Brand to be held without bail, stating that 'obviously a custodial sentence of some length will result' and that he therefore had to remand him into custody.
Following the trial, London's Metropolitan Police confirmed that Brand is being investigated for two additional rape charges, including an allegation involving a 16-year-old girl who claims he assaulted her when he was 30. The legal age of consent in England is 16. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Met said after the conviction: 'Brand used his influence, status and fame to exploit and sexually offend against women. As his profile grew, so too did his sense of entitlement. I hope this conviction sends a clear message that no one is above the law, no matter how famous or powerful they may be.'
Prosecutor David Roberts described Brand as 'a manipulator with an insatiable desire to get what he wanted regardless of whether consent was given or not.' He added: 'As his career took off, he seized opportunities to assault the women around him.' During the three-week trial, the jury heard evidence that Brand assaulted six women in various locations, including a hotel room, MTV's London office, the bathroom of a London bar, a radio station, a recording studio and his own home. The incidents spanned from 1999 to 2009.
The conviction marks a significant fall for Brand, who rose to fame as a comedian and actor before becoming a prominent online commentator. The case has drawn widespread attention in the UK and internationally. Brand's sentencing is scheduled for Monday, when the judge will determine the length of his prison term.
