Satellite Images Reveal Iran Rebuilding Missile Bases with Underground Construction

Recent satellite imagery indicates Iran is rapidly reconstructing missile bases damaged by airstrikes, with significant excavation and construction activity observed at key military sites, according to intelligence analysts.

New satellite images have revealed that Iran is actively rebuilding its missile bases that were severely damaged by months of airstrikes from the United States and Israel, according to a report by BBC Verify. The images, taken in November, show construction and digging at two of Iran's largest military bases: Garmdareh in Karaj, near Tehran, and Shahroud in the north.

Analysts from British intelligence firm MAIAR, who reviewed the photos, identified at least 12 other military sites, including missile complexes and airbases, showing signs of repairs and construction. The activity suggests a systematic effort to restore and reinforce Iran's military infrastructure.

According to MAIAR, Iran has a pattern of moving critical infrastructure underground to protect it from further strikes. This strategy makes it more difficult for adversaries to assess the full extent of Iran's operational capabilities, explained Mark Mellett, a defense analyst and former head of the Irish military.

The excavations near Shahroud may be linked to missile production, according to Jim Lamson, a former CIA analyst and Iran expert. He noted that the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps are likely attempting to relocate production facilities underground after the nearby airbase was repeatedly targeted in airstrikes.

Both Shahroud and Karaj show significant excavation work, with multiple vehicles visible in the satellite images. At Karaj, analysts observed improvements including what appears to be a new portal for an underground facility, said Sam Lair, a research analyst at the Foreign Policy Research Institute (FPRI).

Analysts from Janes Defense Intelligence also identified tunnel entrances at Karaj and structures indicating possible expansion of damaged or destroyed missile bases. The rapid construction pace suggests Iran is preparing for further attacks from the US and Israel, which have slowed in recent weeks after former President Trump announced a pause on strikes ahead of the midterm elections, according to Mark Cancian, a military analyst with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
