0

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s emergency authorities have warned that heavy rain, floods, and strong winds are expected in many parts of the country over the next 24 to 72 hours. People are being asked to stay safe and follow important safety tips.

The warning was issued by the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) on Tuesday as the monsoon season continues to get stronger.

Over 100 People Dead Since June

Since June 26, at least 111 people have died and 212 people have been injured in rain-related incidents across Pakistan. Most of the deaths happened in Punjab, the largest province.

Rain Expected in These Areas

Punjab

Heavy rain is expected in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and D.G. Khan. These areas may face:

  • Floods in streets and low-lying areas

  • Fast rising water in small rivers (nullahs)

  • Power cuts and traffic problems

  • Possible need to move people to safer places

Islamabad

The capital city may also see heavy rain and strong winds. Driving may become risky due to low visibility and slippery roads.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Rain is expected in Swat, Peshawar, Mansehra, and Waziristan. There could be:

  • Flash floods

  • Falling trees and road accidents

Balochistan

Some areas like Quetta, Zhob, Sibi, and Dera Bugti may get thunderstorms and strong winds. These can cause:

  • Damage to weak buildings

  • Driving hazards

Emergency Measures Being Taken

The NDMA has asked local authorities to:

  • Send emergency teams to risky areas

  • Clean and repair drainage systems

  • Work closely with district administrations

Important Safety Advice for Public

Authorities have asked people to:

  • Avoid going outside unless necessary

  • Stay away from weak buildings and electric poles

  • Move vehicles and animals to safe places

  • Don’t visit hilly or mountain areas during heavy rain

Why This Matters

Pakistan is very vulnerable to climate change. In 2022, floods killed over 1,700 people and caused over $33 billion in damages. This is why staying alert during monsoon season is very important.
