Pedestrian Bridge Collapse at Khanewal Railway Station: One Dead, One Injured

A part of the pedestrian bridge at Khanewal Railway Junction Station fell down, causing the death of a railway worker and seriously injuring a female passenger. The bridge was very old—built around 50 years ago—and was the only way for passengers to get to platforms 1 and 2.
The accident happened when the bridge suddenly broke, trapping a senior ticket checker named Muhammad Akram and a woman under the rubble. Rescue teams quickly reached the scene. The woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition, while Muhammad Akram, who was from Lahore, died at the scene.
Pakistan Railways Administration’s Responsibility
This tragic event has raised serious questions about the condition of railway infrastructure and the responsibility of Pakistan Railways. Reports say the bridge was already in a fragile and unsafe state, but no proper repairs were made. This is not the first time Pakistan Railways has faced criticism for not maintaining old structures and failing to ensure passenger safety.
After the collapse, the Federal Minister for Railways, Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, expressed deep sorrow and ordered strict action against those responsible. He immediately suspended three railway officials for negligence: Divisional Engineer Abid Razzaq, Assistant Engineer Raja Yousuf, and Bridge Inspector Muhammad Adil. An inquiry committee, including top railway officials, has been formed to investigate the incident.
What Happens Next?
-
The damaged part of the bridge has been closed, and reconstruction work is starting soon.
-
A technical assessment of the remaining bridge structure will be carried out to prevent future accidents.
-
Despite the incident, train services at Khanewal Station are running as usual, and passengers are being guided through alternative routes.
A Message to Pakistan Railways
This accident shows the urgent need for Pakistan Railways to take better care of its stations and infrastructure. Many bridges and buildings are very old and need repairs or replacement. The administration must act quickly to make stations safe for passengers and staff, so that such tragedies do not happen again.
Pakistan Railways must take full responsibility, improve maintenance, and ensure that all passengers and workers are safe.
