Germany's Opportunity Card Lets Skilled Pakistani Workers Job-Hunt On Arrival

Eligible Pakistani professionals can move to Germany under the Chancenkarte and look for qualified work after arrival, without securing a job offer in advance.

Skilled workers from Pakistan may travel to Germany to look for qualified employment without first securing a job offer, under the country's Opportunity Card route. The scheme, known in German as the Chancenkarte, targets qualified professionals from outside the European Union and allows them to enter Germany and search for suitable work once they are there.

The route is not restricted to engineers or a single profession. According to the programme's design, applicants with qualifying university degrees or vocational qualifications from a broad range of academic and technical fields can potentially apply, provided they satisfy the required criteria.

The Opportunity Card is initially issued for a maximum period of one year. Applicants must demonstrate that they can support themselves financially during their stay, meaning the visa functions as a job-search residence route rather than a direct work permit.

This arrangement lets eligible Pakistani workers relocate first and pursue employment after arrival, instead of having to lock in an employment contract from Pakistan. It opens a pathway for professionals across various backgrounds, not only those in occupations facing labour shortages.

Some restrictions still apply. People aiming to work in regulated professions, including certain healthcare roles, may need to obtain professional recognition or a licence before they can practise in Germany. Germany operates two main qualification routes for the Opportunity Card, and applicants are advised to check the specific requirements for their field before applying.
