At least four people were killed and 88 others injured when two trains collided on Sunday in the al-Ayyat district of Giza province, roughly 52 kilometers south of the Egyptian capital, Cairo, according to the country's Transportation Ministry.
The ministry said a train heading toward the southwestern province of Fayoum struck the rear of a train traveling to the southern province of Aswan. One of the two trains derailed in the crash, though officials did not specify which one.
The Health Ministry confirmed the casualty figures and said the wounded were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Emergency crews and cranes were sent to the site to clear the wreckage and restore normal rail services as quickly as possible, the Egyptian Railway Authority said.
President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi said in a social media post that he had ordered an immediate investigation into the accident so that those responsible could be held accountable.
The collision occurred in the same district where two freight trains crashed last September, injuring a driver and his assistant. Sunday's incident has renewed attention on rail safety in Egypt, where the network carries large numbers of passengers daily.
