Kite-flying activities in Lahore generated more than Rs2 billion in sales of kites and related materials between February 1 and 7, as residents celebrated the return of the Basant festival after years of restrictions. The city’s skyline was once again filled with colorful kites after authorities allowed the traditional event to take place under regulated conditions.

According to the president of the District Kite-Flying Association, sales of kite-flying materials crossed Rs500 million during the three officially permitted festival days alone. He said the revival of Basant created strong demand across the city, benefiting manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers involved in the kite industry.

Association president Shaikh Saleem noted that higher production and supply costs led to an increase in the prices of kites and strings this year. Despite the price hike, he praised the public for adhering to government-imposed safety regulations aimed at preventing accidents and injuries.

He also urged the authorities to announce future Basant celebrations at least three months in advance. According to him, early announcements would help stabilize prices, allow better planning, and give manufacturers sufficient time to prepare inventory.

The Punjab government officially permitted Basant celebrations from February 6 to 8 under the Punjab Regulation of Kite Flying Act 2025, marking the festival’s formal return after a long hiatus.
