The federal government has announced another round of reductions in fuel prices, marking the fourth consecutive cut since it returned to a revised pricing mechanism. Under the latest notification, the price of motor spirit (petrol) has been lowered by Rs9.41 per litre to Rs352.59 per litre, while high-speed diesel (HSD) has been reduced by Rs5.56 per litre to Rs382.25 per litre.

The revised rates apply for the next 24 hours, reflecting the government's move toward daily fuel price updates rather than the previous fortnightly schedule. The change follows the reintroduction of a new price determination formula aimed at aligning domestic rates more closely with international market movements.

The latest cut follows a similar reduction announced a day earlier, when petrol was lowered by Rs7.06 per litre to Rs362 per litre and diesel by Rs3.71 per litre to Rs387.81 per litre. Together, the successive reductions have provided some relief to consumers after weeks of rising costs.

Despite the recent downward trend, fuel prices remain significantly higher than when the daily rate updates began. According to official figures, petrol has risen by a cumulative Rs41.88 per litre and diesel by Rs58.95 per litre since the daily pricing system was introduced. The daily revisions mean consumers and businesses must now track rates more frequently, adding uncertainty for transport operators and industries that rely heavily on fuel.

The government's shift to daily price adjustments is intended to reduce the lag between domestic prices and global oil market fluctuations. However, the mechanism has drawn attention from economists and industry stakeholders, who note that frequent changes can complicate budgeting for businesses and households alike.

Fuel prices are a key driver of inflation in Pakistan, influencing transport costs and the prices of essential goods. The ongoing reductions may offer modest relief on the cost of living, though the overall impact will depend on how long the downward trend continues and how global oil markets behave in the coming days.
