Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday inaugurated the Kashmir Chowk Underpass in Islamabad, a Rs1.45 billion infrastructure project designed to alleviate traffic congestion in the federal capital. The 500-meter underpass was completed in a record 27 days through round-the-clock construction, according to the prime minister.

During the inauguration ceremony, Shehbaz congratulated Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, the Capital Development Authority (CDA), project officials, and contractors for the swift completion of the project. He noted that the development also includes a four-kilometer road network, two monuments, and thousands of newly planted trees.

The prime minister highlighted that the underpass would significantly improve traffic flow in the area, especially as Islamabad prepares to host the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) conference next year. He also emphasized that the project was executed transparently and in accordance with government procurement rules, at a cost 2.5 percent below the estimated amount.

The completion of the underpass in under a month underscores the government's commitment to expediting infrastructure development and ensuring value for money. The project is expected to benefit thousands of commuters daily by reducing travel time and easing congestion at one of the capital's busiest intersections.

The Kashmir Chowk Underpass is part of broader efforts to upgrade Islamabad's road network and enhance the city's readiness for international events. The addition of green spaces and monuments also reflects a focus on improving the urban environment alongside transportation infrastructure.
