PTA Warns Public: Buying or Selling Foreign SIM Cards Is Illegal in Pakistan
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has issued a public warning declaring the purchase and sale of foreign SIM cards illegal, citing fraud and security risks while urging citizens to use only SIMs registered in their own names.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a public awareness message warning citizens that buying and selling foreign SIM cards inside Pakistan is illegal, and has urged mobile users to rely only on locally registered connections issued in their own names.
According to the authority, foreign SIM cards carry serious security risks because they can be exploited for fraudulent and other unlawful activities. The PTA cautioned that such SIMs may be misused by individuals involved in fraud, potentially exposing both buyers and users to legal and security complications.
The regulator advised citizens to protect themselves by completely avoiding the purchase and sale of foreign SIM cards. Instead, users should ensure that their SIM connections are properly registered in their own names, which the authority described as an essential step toward responsible and lawful SIM usage.
The warning is part of the PTA's broader effort to curb fraud, misuse and other illegal activities linked to unregistered or improperly obtained mobile connections. The authority stressed that responsible SIM usage helps prevent criminal exploitation of telecom services and protects consumers from legal exposure.
For ordinary users, the message is straightforward: only use SIM cards issued locally and registered under your own identity, and steer clear of any offer to buy or sell foreign SIMs. The PTA has asked the public to remain vigilant and to treat such transactions as prohibited.
