A British healthcare worker who contracted Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo is being evacuated to the United Kingdom for treatment, the government announced on Thursday. The patient is the first British national to be evacuated from the current outbreak and the third person to test positive for the virus to be brought to Europe for care.

The individual is expected to be treated at the Royal Free Hospital in London, which houses a high-level isolation unit that was previously used during the 2014-2015 West African Ebola outbreak. The UK Foreign Office confirmed that procedures for handling infectious diseases have been activated, and emphasized that the risk to the public from Ebola remains low.

The evacuation comes amid a worsening outbreak in Congo, where the virus has infected over 10,600 people and claimed more than 5,100 lives. The disease has spread to 67 health zones across eight provinces, up from just three zones when the outbreak was first declared in May. The affected regions are among the country's most remote, complicating efforts to contain the virus.

Europe has seen a few isolated cases. In June, France confirmed a case in a doctor who had returned from a humanitarian mission in Congo; the patient has since recovered. Last month, a Swiss woman believed to have contracted the virus in Uganda was medically evacuated to Geneva, and her husband, a diplomat, was placed in isolation in Zurich as a precaution.

Dr. Damien Tully, an infectious disease expert at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, commented on the development, saying, "The infection of a British healthcare worker with Ebola is deeply concerning, but it is not entirely unexpected." His remarks underscore the risks faced by health workers responding to the outbreak in Congo.

The UK's response reflects lessons learned from previous Ebola outbreaks, with specialized isolation facilities and protocols in place to safely manage such cases. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and maintain that the overall risk to the UK public is negligible.
