Punjab Declares Public Holiday on November 9 for Allama Iqbal Day
The Punjab government has announced a province-wide public holiday on Monday, November 9, to mark the birth anniversary of national poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal, giving many employees an extended weekend.

The Punjab government has announced a public holiday across the province on Monday, November 9, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, the national poet and philosopher. The Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD) issued an official notification confirming the decision.
Because the holiday falls on a Monday, employees who normally have Sundays off will enjoy two consecutive days of rest. Those whose weekly schedule also includes Saturday off will get a three-day break running from November 7 to November 9.
According to the notification, the holiday will be observed throughout Punjab in line with a circular issued by the federal Cabinet Division on November 5. The provincial government has also instructed that the announcement be published in major English and Urdu newspapers and publicised widely through electronic media.
Allama Iqbal Day is observed every year on November 9 to honour the birth anniversary of the poet and thinker whose work helped shape the idea of a separate homeland for the Muslims of the subcontinent. The occasion is marked with ceremonies, literary events and discussions on his contribution to the region's political and intellectual history.
The decision follows the federal government's move to formalise the holiday, ensuring consistency in how the day is observed nationwide. Provincial authorities have urged departments to make sure the public is informed about the holiday through official channels.
For many workers and students, the Monday holiday offers a chance to observe the occasion and enjoy a longer weekend before the working week resumes on Tuesday.
