Derbyshire Falcons have officially announced the signing of Pakistan left-arm wrist-spinner Sufiyan Muqeem for the first half of the 2026 Vitality Blast. The 26-year-old spinner, renowned for his T20 exploits, recorded his best international T20 figures of 5 for 3 for Pakistan and has quickly become one of the most sought-after spinners in franchise cricket.
Muqeem previously worked with Derbyshire head coach Mickey Arthur during their stint together at the Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League, and both parties are excited about the reunion. Across 38 T20 matches, Muqeem has maintained an impressive economy rate of 6.35 runs per over, with half of those appearances at the international level. Internationally, he has played 19 T20Is for Pakistan, taking 27 wickets at an economy of 6.28, while in four ODIs he has claimed eight wickets at an economy rate of 4.91.
He is expected to feature in Derbyshire’s opening six Vitality Blast fixtures this summer, including the East Midlands Derby against Notts Outlaws at The Central Co-op County Ground on Friday, May 29. Head coach Mickey Arthur welcomed the signing, praising Muqeem’s ability to handle pressure, his strong character, and the value he will bring to the Falcons in the early stages of the tournament.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Muqeem said, “I’m thrilled to be joining the Falcons and working with Mickey again. He’s a fantastic coach, and I can’t wait to experience playing cricket in England.” The 2026 Vitality Blast is scheduled to run from May 22 to July 18, with Essex set to face Sussex in the tournament opener. Muqeem’s arrival is expected to bolster Derbyshire’s spin options and bring international experience to the side’s campaign.
