Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 Consumes Up to 16GB of iPhone Storage, Users Report

iPhone owners say Apple's on-device AI features in iOS 27 are eating up as much as 16GB of storage, a problem that hits hardest on 128GB models where the operating system and AI models together can consume roughly 30% of capacity.

Some iPhone users are reporting that the Apple Intelligence features introduced with iOS 27 are consuming a significant amount of on-device storage, with figures ranging from about 9GB to as much as 16GB depending on the device. The complaints have surfaced across online forums and community threads, where users have shared storage breakdowns showing the AI components taking up far more space than they expected.

The issue is especially painful for owners of 128GB iPhones. According to user reports, the combination of the operating system, Apple Intelligence, and reserved system storage can occupy around 30% of a device's total capacity on some 128GB models, including certain iPhone 16 units. That leaves noticeably less room for photos, apps, and files on phones that were already considered entry-level in terms of storage.

The storage burden stems from how Apple has designed its AI strategy. Rather than relying entirely on cloud servers, the company runs many Apple Intelligence features through models stored directly on the device, which keeps processing private but requires dedicated space. Apple's own support documentation states that the new Apple Intelligence can require up to 14GB on certain supported devices, while some other compatible models need up to 8GB.

Apple has acknowledged that storage usage may rise temporarily during or shortly after an update, as new AI models are downloaded and older versions are removed. Even so, some users are reporting figures above the company's stated maximum, with Apple Intelligence alone appearing to take up as much as 16GB on their devices.

Adding to the frustration, some users say they are seeing the storage hit even in regions where certain Apple Intelligence features are not yet available. That means owners can lose valuable space to AI models they cannot fully use, a particular concern in markets where the rollout of these capabilities has lagged behind the United States.

iOS 27 brought substantial upgrades to Apple Intelligence, including more advanced AI tools and a revamped Siri, and the company has positioned on-device processing as a privacy advantage. For buyers considering a new iPhone, however, the reports highlight a practical trade-off: models with 128GB of storage may leave relatively little headroom once the operating system and AI features are accounted for. Users with limited space may want to check their storage settings after updating and consider whether a higher-capacity model better suits their needs.
