The Pakistani rupee saw a marginal increase against the US dollar in the interbank market on Monday, with the local currency rising by 0.01%. The rupee closed at 277.22 against the dollar, registering a gain of Rs0.03 compared to the previous close.
Last week, the rupee had improved by 0.03% to settle at 277.25 against the US dollar in the interbank market.
On the global front, currency markets turned their attention to the yen after a significant decline the previous week led to speculation about possible interventions by Tokyo authorities. Japanese financial markets were shut for a three-day holiday, creating lower liquidity and vigilance among traders regarding potential official actions. The yen recovered slightly to 156.64 per US dollar after a 2% drop last week.
The euro remained nearly unchanged at $1.1482 after early results from regional elections in northeastern Germany indicated a first-place finish by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), challenging Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservative party.
Meanwhile, the dollar index, measuring the dollar against six major currencies, held steady at 100.23. This follows last week’s rise of over 1% after the Federal Reserve’s interest rate hike and indications of potential further increases. Traders are now pricing in a 55% probability of another rate hike at the Federal Reserve’s upcoming October meeting, as per the CME FedWatch tool.
Oil prices, which have a significant influence on currency valuations, declined towards $100 a barrel, the lowest point in 11 days. This drop is attributed to investor hopes for diplomatic progress regarding the war in Iran and a partial return of supplies from Saudi Arabia. Brent crude futures for November fell to $101.18 a barrel, down $2.69 or 2.6%, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for October decreased by $2.69 or 2.7% to $97.61 a barrel. The November WTI contract traded at $93.49.
In the open currency market, the rupee showed mixed results: it fell by 4 paisa for buying and gained 3 paisa for selling against the US dollar, closing at 278.23 and 279.07, respectively. Versus the euro, the rupee increased by 2 paisa for buying but dropped by 21 paisa for selling, ending at 318.85 and 321.93. For the UAE dirham, the rupee lost 3 paisa for buying and 2 paisa for selling, finishing at 75.68 and 76.27. Against the Saudi riyal, the rupee depreciated by 4 paisa for buying and 5 paisa for selling, closing at 73.99 and 74.52.
