The Karachi administration has widened its ban on 1+4 rickshaws to cover six additional major roads, expanding the enforcement from 20 to 26 key arteries to improve traffic flow across the city. The move, issued under Section 144 through a notification by the Karachi Commissioner, instructs law enforcement to register cases under Section 188 against violators.
The decision follows recommendations from the DIG Traffic, who emphasized that limiting rickshaw movement on busy routes would help reduce congestion and minimize the risk of accidents. A complete ban has already been enforced on roads including Shahrah-e-Faisal to II Chundrigar Road, with immediate effect.
The notification specifies that the rickshaw ban will remain in place from October 18 to December 17, 2025. Police officers have been directed to lodge FIRs against any rickshaw operators violating the order, and deputy commissioners and relevant departments are tasked with ensuring strict and timely compliance.
Officials stated that the extension was prompted by persistent traffic jams, public complaints, and safety concerns on major roads. The newly added six routes are now included in the restricted zone for the same duration, marking a significant step by the Karachi administration to regulate traffic, enhance road safety, and improve the overall commuting experience for residents.
