Freelancing in Gilgit-Baltistan has emerged as a significant driver of economic activity, with a recent study estimating that local freelancers are generating around $15 million annually, far outpacing the $3.5 million contributed by traditional IT companies in the region. The freelance workforce, consisting of approximately 3,000 to 4,000 professionals, primarily operates through global online platforms such as Upwork and Fiverr, offering services in software development, design, content creation, and digital marketing.
Gilgit-Baltistan’s growing reputation as a freelancing hub is supported by its high literacy rate and a rising pool of skilled digital talent. Regional and international organizations, including the Pakistan Association of Freelancers & Local Authorities (PAFLA) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), along with development agencies, have invested in initiatives such as tech parks, training programs, and coworking spaces to nurture this ecosystem. These efforts are creating structured opportunities for freelancers, helping them access global markets and increase their income potential.
Despite challenges such as intermittent electricity and limited high-speed internet connectivity, the local freelance sector continues to expand. The combination of talent, training, and emerging infrastructure indicates strong potential for sustained growth, positioning Gilgit-Baltistan as a notable contributor to Pakistan’s digital economy and a promising hub for remote work opportunities in the coming years.
