ChatGPT Ranked as Apple’s Most Downloaded iPhone App of 2025

Apple has unveiled its annual list of the most downloaded apps and games, highlighting major trends in mobile usage for 2025. In a notable development, ChatGPT claimed the top position as the most downloaded free iPhone app in the U.S., marking a significant milestone for AI-driven applications. Following ChatGPT in the rankings were Threads, Google, TikTok, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail, and Google’s Gemini app.

The rapid ascent of ChatGPT is particularly striking. In 2024, it ranked fourth, trailing behind apps like the Chinese shopping platform Temu, and in 2023, it did not appear in the top-10 list at all. Despite launching on iPhone in May 2023, ChatGPT quickly gained traction, surpassing well-established social networking and utility apps. Analysts note that this trend reflects AI’s growing role in daily life, with more users turning to chatbots for information and services, potentially challenging Google’s dominance in mobile search. Earlier in 2025, ChatGPT was already the most downloaded app worldwide in March, overtaking TikTok and Instagram.

Apple’s rankings also covered top paid apps, free and paid games for iPhone and iPad, and Apple Arcade favorites. Block Blast! emerged as the leading free game, while Minecraft retained its position as the most popular paid game on iPhone. For iPad users, YouTube topped the free app category, and Procreate led as the top paid app. Roblox was the most downloaded free game on the iPad platform, highlighting the continued popularity of interactive and creative gaming among tablet users.

The 2025 app rankings underscore shifting trends in digital consumption, emphasizing the growing influence of AI tools, the sustained demand for creative apps, and the enduring appeal of mobile gaming across devices.
