The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has invited mobile phone manufacturers in Pakistan for consultations as the country prepares for the launch of 5G services. These discussions aim to align the local handset ecosystem with 5G requirements and ensure that devices are ready ahead of the upcoming spectrum auction. Pakistan currently hosts 36 mobile phone manufacturing companies, including both local and international brands, producing handsets for the domestic market. The PTA is seeking feedback from these manufacturers regarding the availability of 5G-compatible devices, production capacity, affordability, and timelines to support a smooth rollout of next-generation mobile services.
The government plans to hold the 5G spectrum auction by the end of February 2026, a critical step to improve high-speed connectivity, expand digital services, and support technologies such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and smart applications across multiple sectors. Early engagement with manufacturers is intended to address potential challenges related to device availability and consumer adoption. Coordinated planning among regulators, telecom operators, and manufacturers is seen as essential to ensure that 5G services, once launched, are widely accessible and benefit the broader population.
