The government has announced plans to revive the Islamabad–Tehran–Istanbul (ITI) freight train service by December 31, 2025, following the resolution of key trade, administrative, and logistical challenges. Federal Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi confirmed that the service, which has been inactive since 2022, will play a vital role in strengthening regional trade and economic cooperation between Pakistan, Iran, and Türkiye. In addition to the ITI corridor revival, Pakistan aims to establish a new rail link with Kazakhstan through Chaman under a forthcoming agreement, expanding the country’s connectivity with Central Asia. The government has also outlined major infrastructure upgrades, including the rehabilitation of the Rohri–Karachi railway track, set to begin in July 2026 with funding support from the Asian Development Bank. Meanwhile, passenger operations will receive a boost as the modernized Shalimar Express resumes service on November 7. According to official data, Pakistan Railways generated Rs. 4.5 billion in revenue through cargo operations, reflecting renewed momentum in the sector. The revival of regional routes and modernization of domestic lines are expected to enhance freight capacity, support export growth, and strengthen Pakistan’s position as a key trade transit hub.
