Islamabad authorities have taken a significant step to enhance urban security and streamline traffic monitoring by installing advanced m-tag readers and surveillance cameras at multiple key entry and exit points across the capital. This initiative, implemented under the supervision of the Islamabad Safe City Authority, is part of a broader effort to strengthen vehicle tracking, prevent violations, and ensure public safety in line with government directives that make m-tags mandatory for all vehicles in the city.
The newly deployed system works by automatically scanning m-tags and vehicle registration plates as vehicles enter or leave designated points. If the system detects a mismatch between the m-tag and the registered vehicle or identifies an untagged vehicle, it immediately generates an alert. These alerts are transmitted in real-time to the central Safe City network, allowing authorities to take swift action, whether by notifying field patrols or initiating follow-up investigations.
Currently, the m-tag readers and cameras are operational at major traffic hubs and high-traffic areas, including Faizabad, D-Chowk, Zero Point, and Ninth Avenue, which are some of the busiest intersections in Islamabad. Officials highlighted that these locations were prioritized due to their strategic importance in managing traffic flow and preventing unauthorized or suspicious vehicle movement.
Beyond traffic monitoring, the system is expected to play a crucial role in curbing illegal activities such as the use of fake or cloned number plates, unauthorized entry of commercial or government vehicles, and other security-related violations. By integrating the m-tag technology with surveillance cameras, authorities can track vehicle movement across the city with unprecedented accuracy, maintain comprehensive records of daily traffic patterns, and support law enforcement in ongoing investigations.
The Islamabad Safe City Authority emphasized that the initiative aligns with modern smart city practices, leveraging technology to enhance public safety, improve traffic management, and ensure compliance with national vehicle registration laws.
