Pakistan’s Gadani Shipbreaking Yard Achieves First-Ever Hong Kong Convention Certification

Pakistan has taken a significant step toward sustainable and environmentally responsible ship recycling as Prime Green Recycling Yard at Gadani has become the country’s first facility to receive certification under the Hong Kong International Convention. This milestone brings Pakistan’s shipbreaking sector closer to internationally recognized safety, labor, and environmental standards.

The certification aligns local ship recycling practices with global requirements, improving worker safety, hazardous waste handling, and environmental protection. It also enhances Pakistan’s credibility in the international maritime industry at a time when shipowners are increasingly seeking compliant and responsible recycling facilities.

Shipbreaking plays a critical role in Pakistan’s economy, meeting nearly 20 percent of domestic metal demand and providing livelihoods for thousands of workers. Despite its importance, the sector has historically struggled with workplace safety issues, environmental concerns, and inconsistent regulatory enforcement.

Compliance with the Hong Kong International Convention signals meaningful progress toward modernization, sustainability, and global competitiveness. However, experts caution that one certified yard alone is not enough. They emphasize the need for wider industry reforms, investment in infrastructure, stronger regulatory oversight, and consistent enforcement to ensure long-term revival and future readiness of Pakistan’s shipbreaking industry.
