Pakistan has issued its first-ever ferry service licence in a landmark step aimed at promoting maritime tourism and strengthening the country’s blue economy. The licence was granted during the inauguration of Pakistan’s first dedicated ferry terminal at Karachi Port Trust, led by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry. The development marks a significant milestone in the modernization of Pakistan’s maritime transport infrastructure.

The ferry service is expected to begin operations later this month, opening new avenues for passenger travel along the country’s coastline. The minister said the initiative is in line with the prime minister’s vision to harness the untapped potential of the blue economy and diversify maritime-related economic activities. He noted that ferry services would introduce a modern, safe, and sustainable mode of maritime passenger transport that Pakistan has long envisioned.

Chaudhry highlighted that the move has already generated strong interest from investors, with several businessmen expressing a desire to obtain licences to operate ferry services. He said increased private sector participation is expected to play a key role in boosting maritime tourism, creating employment opportunities, and stimulating economic growth linked to port cities and coastal regions.

The minister encouraged the business community to come forward with innovative ideas and proposals related to port operations and maritime services, assuring them of full cooperation and facilitation from the ministry. He added that the inauguration of the ferry terminal would further strengthen investor confidence and reinforce trust between the government and the private sector, paving the way for future investment in Pakistan’s maritime economy.
