The United States hosted nearly 1.2 million international students in the 2024-25 academic year, although new enrolments declined by 7%, largely due to a 15% drop in graduate-level admissions. Despite this overall slowdown, Pakistani students continued to increase their presence in US higher education, particularly in STEM fields.

More than 55% of Pakistani students in the US pursued STEM programs in 2024-25, with 21% enrolled in mathematics and computer science and nearly 20% in engineering. Undergraduate enrolment from Pakistan grew 26% year-over-year, while postgraduate enrolment increased by 18%, demonstrating sustained interest in advanced education even as overall international graduate enrolment declined.

Interest in post-study employment is also rising among Pakistani students, reflected in increased participation in Optional Practical Training (OPT) programs. According to ApplyBoard’s Fall 2025 Recruitment Partner Pulse Survey, 88% of students now prioritize work opportunities nearly as much as affordability, compared to 91% who prioritize cost. These trends indicate that Pakistani students are making outcomes-driven decisions, favoring programs and destinations that provide clear pathways to employment and long-term career growth.
