In response to the growing threat of smog, the Punjab government has initiated a province-wide crackdown on smoke-emitting vehicles, aiming to reduce air pollution and improve environmental health. The Director General of Environment, Dr. Imran Hamid Sheikh, announced that effective immediately, any vehicle emitting visible smoke will be barred from operating on public roads. This enforcement action, led in coordination with the traffic police, marks a significant step in the province’s ongoing efforts to combat deteriorating air quality.
Authorities have been instructed to take immediate action against all non-compliant vehicles, with a particular focus on those lacking valid fitness certificates. Vehicles failing to meet roadworthiness standards will be removed from service without delay, in accordance with environmental regulations and traffic laws. The directive also includes a broader initiative to ease traffic congestion in high-density areas, which contributes significantly to air pollution levels.
In addition to targeting vehicular emissions, Dr. Sheikh emphasized strict action against the illegal burning of garbage, a major contributor to smog formation. Law enforcement agencies have been directed to arrest individuals found engaging in such activities and to register criminal cases to deter further violations.
This multi-pronged approach reflects the government’s urgent commitment to addressing smog, which poses serious health risks during the winter season. With air quality reaching hazardous levels in recent years, the campaign underscores the need for coordinated environmental enforcement to protect public health and promote cleaner urban living across Punjab.
