A diplomatic controversy erupted after Muhammad Yunus, the interim leader of Bangladesh, presented a book to a Pakistani general featuring a distorted map that incorrectly depicted India’s northeastern states as part of Bangladesh. The incident occurred during the recent visit of General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Chairman of Pakistan’s Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, to Dhaka. Following the meeting, Yunus shared photos on social media showing him handing a copy of his book, Art of Triumph, to General Mirza. The book’s cover prominently displayed the contentious map, which sparked immediate outrage in New Delhi. India lodged a strong protest, calling the depiction a serious misrepresentation of its territorial integrity. Officials in New Delhi described the act as “highly objectionable” and said that such imagery undermines the spirit of regional cooperation. The Bangladeshi government has not yet issued an official clarification regarding the incident, but diplomatic sources suggest that the matter could strain relations between India and Bangladesh if left unresolved. Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate known for his contributions to microfinance, has been serving as Bangladesh’s interim leader during the current transitional phase. However, this controversy has overshadowed his recent diplomatic engagements, drawing attention to the sensitivity of territorial issues in South Asia.
