DoorDash has appeared to confirm a viral claim involving a delivery driver who allegedly used an AI-generated image to falsely mark an order as delivered. The incident was shared by Austin resident Byrne Hobart on X, where he described how a DoorDash driver accepted the order, immediately marked it as delivered, and submitted what appeared to be an AI-generated photo showing the food placed at his front door.
Hobart acknowledged that his story could have been easy to fabricate, but said it gained credibility after another user replied that they experienced a similar issue in Austin involving a driver with the same display name. The repeated reports raised concerns about potential abuse of the platform.
According to Hobart, the driver may have used a hacked account on a jailbroken phone and accessed images of his front door through DoorDash’s system, which can display photos from previous deliveries. This could have allowed the driver to generate a convincing fake delivery image without actually completing the order.
In response, a DoorDash spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company investigated the incident, permanently removed the driver’s account, and compensated the affected customer. The company reiterated that it has zero tolerance for fraud and relies on a mix of technology and human review to identify and prevent misuse of its delivery platform.
