Lahore General Hospital (LGH) is set to introduce the advanced Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS) technique for kidney stone removal, marking a major milestone in public-sector urology services in Pakistan. This state-of-the-art procedure allows for minimally invasive, incision-free treatment, significantly reducing patient recovery time.
The development was announced by AMC Principal Prof. Dr. Muhammad Farooq Afzal during a specialized workshop, which aimed to train urologists in the latest laser and endoscopic technologies used in RIRS. The workshop was supervised by Dr. Kamran Zaidi and led by master trainers, providing participants with hands-on experience to ensure proficiency in the technique.
Experts highlighted several key benefits of RIRS, including minimal pain, lower risk of blood loss, and a faster return to daily activities, with most patients able to recover in less than 24 hours. The adoption of this technology at LGH is expected to improve patient outcomes, modernize surgical capabilities, and enhance the overall quality of urology care in Pakistan’s public healthcare sector.
This initiative reflects a broader commitment to integrating advanced medical technologies in public hospitals, ensuring that patients have access to cutting-edge treatments without the need for costly private-sector alternatives.
