PIMS Hospital has marked a historic achievement by performing Islamabad’s first robotic surgery on a female patient, a milestone in the advancement of Pakistan’s healthcare technology. The surgery was conducted using the state-of-the-art ‘Tomai’ surgical robot from China, with expert guidance provided by specialists from the United Kingdom. The groundbreaking procedure was a collaborative effort between the General Surgery and Urology departments at PIMS, under the supervision of Prof. Shamim Khan, Prof. Mateen Sharif, and Dr. Javed Barki. Their combined expertise played a crucial role in ensuring the success of this pioneering operation. Dr. Mateen Sharif emphasized that robotic surgery is revolutionizing modern medicine by providing enhanced precision, reducing bleeding, and allowing faster patient recovery. The robotic system enables surgeons to perform complex procedures with greater control, minimizing the risk of complications and improving overall surgical outcomes. PIMS Executive Director Dr. Imran Sikandar highlighted the benefits of this technology, noting that it significantly reduces patient pain, shortens hospital stays, and helps patients resume normal life sooner. He also commended the medical team for their dedication in introducing innovative practices to Pakistan’s healthcare system. The successful completion of this robotic surgery represents a major step forward in integrating advanced healthcare technologies in the country. Officials at PIMS are optimistic that with continued government support, robotic surgical procedures could soon become accessible in other hospitals across Pakistan. This achievement showcases the growing capabilities of Pakistan’s medical sector and reflects the country’s readiness to adopt international healthcare standards. It marks a proud moment for Islamabad and signals a promising future for surgical advancements in Pakistan.
