Lahore High Court Receives Challenge Against Recent Petroleum Price Hike

The recent hike in fuel prices has been challenged in the Lahore High Court, with the petitioner arguing that the increase violates the Constitution and unfairly targets the public, especially coming just before Ramadan. The petition requests the court to examine the full record and formula used to determine petroleum pricing and to direct authorities to align fuel prices with prevailing international rates.

The federal government has announced an immediate increase in petroleum product rates. Petrol prices have risen by 5 rupees per litre, bringing the new cost to Rs258.17 per litre, while diesel prices have increased by 7 rupees and 32 paisa, reaching Rs275.70 per litre. The Petroleum Division stated that the decision followed a review of domestic fuel trends, global oil rates, and overall market conditions in Pakistan.

Authorities explained that fluctuations in international oil prices, local supply constraints, and rising demand were key factors behind the adjustment. The Petroleum Division emphasized that fuel prices are reviewed regularly to balance fiscal needs with consumer affordability, and any further changes will be communicated after the next scheduled fortnightly review.
