Iran Rejects Talks With US in ‘Atmosphere of Threats,’ Says Foreign Minister Amid Rising Tensions

Iran has stated that there can be no negotiations with the United States as long as Washington issues threats against the Islamic republic. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that diplomacy cannot succeed in an atmosphere of military intimidation, excessive demands, or “illogical issues,” following the deployment of a US aircraft carrier to the region. Araghchi added that Iran has not sought negotiations and has had no recent contact with US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also warned that US threats would only destabilize the region. The US has not ruled out military action in response to Iran’s crackdown on protesters, which rights groups say has left thousands dead. President Donald Trump dispatched the USS Abraham Lincoln to the area as a precaution. In a call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Pezeshkian said US threats aimed to disrupt regional security and would achieve nothing but instability. Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry confirmed the crown prince assured that Riyadh would not allow its territory or airspace to be used against Iran.

The Revolutionary Guards have also issued warnings to neighboring countries, stating that any use of their territory, airspace, or waters against Iran would be considered hostile. While Trump has issued mixed messages regarding potential intervention, including referring to a “big armada” near Iran, he indicated that Iran has expressed interest in talks. Analysts suggest that US options include strikes on military facilities or targeted attacks against leadership under Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Reports indicate that US intelligence has assessed Iran’s government as being at its weakest point since the 1979 revolution. Senator Lindsey Graham stated that the ultimate US goal is to end the Iranian regime, warning that authorities will continue suppressing protesters if they remain in power. Iranian media has indicated that the country is prepared for a major response, including the potential seizure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies.
