ISLAMABAD: A document issued by the Ministry of Petroleum has detailed the tax structure embedded in petrol and diesel prices in Pakistan, revealing that a substantial portion of fuel costs paid by consumers consists of government levies, duties, and margins.
According to the official breakdown, 39 percent of the petrol price per litre represents taxes and duties, while diesel carries a 34 percent tax component. In monetary terms, Rs100.21 per litre on petrol and Rs94.93 per litre on diesel are collected through various levies, customs duties, and distribution margins.
The petroleum levy on petrol stands at Rs84.40 per litre, accompanied by a customs duty of Rs13.31 and a climate support levy of Rs2.50 per litre. For high-speed diesel, the petroleum levy is Rs76.21 per litre, along with Rs15.68 in customs duty and a Rs2.50 per litre climate support levy.
The pricing structure also includes margins for industry stakeholders. Oil marketing companies receive Rs7.87 per litre on both petrol and diesel, while petroleum dealers are allocated Rs8.64 per litre. Freight charges are set at Rs8.23 per litre for petrol and Rs6.25 per litre for diesel.
In addition to petrol and high-speed diesel, the document outlines tax components on other petroleum products. Kerosene oil is subject to 11 percent tax, while light diesel oil carries a 10 percent tax. Levies amount to Rs20.36 per litre on kerosene and Rs15.84 per litre on light diesel oil. High-octane fuel is also subject to a petroleum levy of Rs84.40 per litre.
The disclosure comes amid continued public debate over fuel prices in Pakistan and the overall tax burden incorporated into petroleum pricing.
Earlier, the federal government announced an increase in petroleum product prices. Petrol prices were raised by Rs5 per litre, while diesel increased by Rs7.32 per litre. As per the Petroleum Division, the revised rates took immediate effect following a review of global oil prices, domestic fuel trends, and broader market conditions.
Under the updated pricing, petrol is now priced at Rs258.17 per litre, while high-speed diesel costs Rs275.70 per litre across Pakistan.
