The School Education Department has announced plans to introduce a mandatory teacher licensing system in 2026, requiring all government and private school teachers to obtain a professional teaching license. Officials confirmed that a summary for approval will soon be submitted to the Provincial Cabinet, and the new framework will tie the extension of contracts for teachers to the successful acquisition of a license.
Under the proposed system, candidates must pass a licensing examination to qualify, with only those who clear the test receiving an official teaching license. The Punjab Examination Commission (PEC/PECTA) will manage and oversee the testing process.
The department emphasized that the licensing initiative is designed to improve teaching quality, uphold professional standards, and enhance student learning outcomes across schools in the province.
