Punjab Bans Petrol Motorcycle Rickshaws as CM Maryam Nawaz Strengthens Anti-Smog Measures Across Province

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a province-wide ban on the production of petrol-powered motorcycle rickshaws, marking a significant step toward phasing out petrol vehicles. This initiative forms part of a broader anti-smog strategy, which includes transitioning all government departments to electric and hybrid vehicles to reduce emissions.

The government has introduced several environmental measures to further improve air quality, such as prohibiting vehicle washing at home, enforcing strict penalties for burning harmful materials, and installing color-coded dustbins across Punjab for better waste management. The province has also launched its first advanced air quality monitoring system, featuring real-time AQI forecasting and smog control mechanisms.

Authorities reported an 88% decrease in crop burning, achieved through drone surveillance and rapid response teams. In addition, thousands of polluting industrial units and kilns have been sealed or demolished. Expanded vehicle emission testing and continuous monitoring through Safe City initiatives are helping maintain cleaner air and a healthier environment throughout the region.
