The Punjab government has introduced a major policy change by banning the purchase of petrol and diesel vehicles for all provincial departments as part of its push toward cleaner and more sustainable transportation. Under the new directive, government institutions will now be permitted to procure only electric or hybrid vehicles, with an exemption granted to vehicles required specifically for field operations.
The decision was approved during a high-level meeting in Lahore, where Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said the move reflects Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s vision of making Punjab a greener and more environmentally responsible province. She emphasized that the policy is aimed at reducing reliance on fossil fuels and encouraging the adoption of cleaner mobility solutions within the public sector.
In a related step to support electric mobility, the Punjab Chief Secretary announced that the issuance of No Objection Certificates for new petrol pumps will be conditional on the installation of electric vehicle charging stations. This measure is intended to develop the necessary infrastructure to support the growing number of electric vehicles across the province.
The initiative represents a significant effort by the Punjab government to cut carbon emissions, promote eco-friendly transport alternatives, and set an example for sustainable practices within government departments.
