HMD 100, 101, and 102 Launched as Budget-Friendly Basic Phones for Everyday Use

HMD has expanded its lineup of basic mobile phones with the introduction of three new models: the HMD 100, HMD 101, and HMD 102. Announced by CEO Jean-Francois Baril, these devices follow the company’s recent launch of similar 4G feature phones but come with more limited functionality. The new models focus on essential communication needs and are designed for regions where older network technologies such as 2G are still available.

Among the trio, the HMD 102 offers the most features, including a built-in MP3 player and a basic camera supported by an LED flash. The HMD 101 removes the camera option, positioning itself as a simpler alternative for users who only require calling and texting. The HMD 100 is the most stripped-down model, appearing to lack an MP3 player and likely omitting microSD storage expansion, which suggests extremely limited built-in storage capacity.

A notable omission across the lineup is the absence of confirmed 4G support. This is significant as many countries are discontinuing 2G and 3G services in favor of modern networks. Another drawback is the continued use of microUSB charging ports, a connector type now restricted in regions like the European Union, where USB-C has become mandatory for portable electronic devices.

HMD is directing these handsets toward markets where 2G networks are still functional, which includes rural and underserved areas in countries such as Pakistan. The company’s user guides list both standard and 4G versions of the HMD 101, indicating that upgraded variants with dual-SIM functionality and USB-C ports are sold in regions that require modern connectivity standards.

Pricing has not been officially confirmed, but these devices fall into the category of ultra-affordable feature phones. Given current market trends and their basic specifications, the new HMD models are expected to launch below the typical 50 to 100-dollar range, appealing to budget-conscious users or those seeking a dependable secondary phone for everyday communication.
