Pakistan has secured the 17th position among 101 countries in global generosity rankings, with a strong culture of giving reflected in the high level of public participation in charitable activities during 2024. According to data released by the Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy, 73 percent of people in the country reported donating in some form over the year, significantly higher than the global average of 64 percent. This places Pakistan among the more generous nations worldwide despite ongoing economic pressures faced by many households.
The findings show that giving in Pakistan is deeply rooted in religious beliefs, social responsibility, and compassion for others. Faith-based obligations such as zakat, sadaqah, and other forms of charitable giving continue to play a central role, while a strong sense of duty toward helping those in need further strengthens the culture of philanthropy. Donations are frequently made through multiple channels, with 51 percent of contributors giving directly to individuals, reflecting strong community and family support networks. At the same time, 47 percent donate to charitable organizations, while 34 percent contribute to religious causes, underscoring the importance of both formal and informal giving systems.
Despite lower average income levels compared to many countries, Pakistanis contribute a larger share of their earnings to charitable causes. On average, individuals donate 1.64 percent of their income, which exceeds the global average contribution rate. This highlights a willingness to give that goes beyond financial capacity and points to a deeply ingrained tradition of generosity driven by moral values rather than economic comfort.
Overall, the data illustrates that philanthropy in Pakistan is not limited to wealth or institutional giving but is instead a widespread social practice shaped by faith, empathy, and communal responsibility. This enduring culture of compassionate giving continues to play a vital role in supporting vulnerable populations and strengthening social cohesion across the country.
