US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a range of options to gain control over Greenland, including the possible use of military force, raising tensions with Denmark and NATO allies. According to the White House, Trump views acquiring Greenland as a national security priority to counter Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic. The discussion comes after the US military operation in Venezuela, which involved the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, heightening global concern over US foreign policy actions.
Trump has previously suggested purchasing Greenland, a mineral-rich autonomous territory of Denmark, and officials indicate that buying the island remains his preferred strategy, with military options being considered as leverage rather than an immediate plan for invasion. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly reassured lawmakers that no US invasion is imminent, emphasizing that negotiations and strategic options are ongoing.
Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected any attempt by the US to assert control over the territory. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that any military action against Greenland would undermine NATO and could effectively collapse the alliance, which has provided transatlantic security for more than eight decades. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen emphasized that the island is not for sale and that only the people of Greenland and Denmark have the right to decide its future.
European leaders from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, and Spain issued a joint statement supporting Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland, highlighting the importance of Arctic security within NATO and rejecting unilateral attempts by the US to take control of the territory. The statement stressed that Greenland’s strategic position and resources must be managed in accordance with international law and the rights of its inhabitants.
Greenland’s strategic importance lies in its geographic location, including defense infrastructure such as the Pituffik Space Base, and its untapped mineral resources, which the US considers important for reducing dependence on foreign suppliers. The controversy has sparked debates within the US as well, with lawmakers and officials cautioning against military action and stressing the importance of maintaining Denmark as a key ally.
The situation highlights growing international concerns over Arctic strategy, alliance commitments, and territorial sovereignty, as Greenland’s future becomes a focal point in global security and geopolitical planning.
