Denmark’s Prime Minister Says Trump Is Serious About Greenland Takeover, But Denmark and Greenland Reject Idea

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has stated that U.S. President Donald Trump should be taken seriously regarding his repeated statements about wanting to take over Greenland, even though both Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected this idea. Frederiksen emphasized that Greenland is not for sale and any decisions about its future must be made by the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark. Her comments highlight growing concerns in Copenhagen and Nuuk about the geopolitical implications of Trump’s remarks and the recent U.S. military operation in Venezuela.

Trump has reiterated that the United States “needs Greenland” for national defense purposes, linking the strategic importance of the Arctic territory to security interests. These statements have raised alarm among Danish and Greenlandic officials, who stress that Greenland’s autonomous status and its integration within Denmark and NATO must be respected. Any attempt to use military force against Greenland could severely undermine NATO and disrupt transatlantic security arrangements that have been in place since the Second World War.

Greenlandic leaders have also rejected U.S. takeover claims, emphasizing that there is no immediate threat of invasion. Officials insist that cooperation, respect for international law, and recognition of Greenland’s self-governing status are essential. The Danish and Greenlandic governments continue to maintain that any future changes to Greenland’s governance must follow legal processes and reflect the will of the Greenlandic people. This ongoing discussion has intensified international attention on Greenland’s strategic position, Arctic resources, and the broader security concerns involving the United States, Denmark, and NATO allies.
