The Government College Women University Faisalabad (GCWUF) has introduced a mandatory Punjabi language and literature course for undergraduate students. The two-credit-hour course, titled “Punjabi Zaban Te Adab,” has been approved by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Kanwal Ameen and will be required for students enrolled in the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Humanities and Languages, and Management Sciences.

University officials emphasized that the initiative reflects GCWUF’s commitment to promoting indigenous languages and fostering students’ understanding of their linguistic heritage. The course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the Punjabi language, its rich literary traditions, and the cultural practices connected to it. By incorporating Punjabi into the curriculum, the university aims to instill respect for regional languages and celebrate Pakistan’s cultural and linguistic diversity.

For students from other provinces, the Punjabi course is not compulsory. Instead, they will take an alternative course titled “Urdu: Fables, Wisdom Literature, and Epic” to fulfill their language requirement. This approach ensures that all students engage in meaningful language and literature studies while respecting regional and cultural differences.

GCWUF’s move marks a significant step in integrating regional languages into higher education, highlighting the value of linguistic identity and cultural preservation alongside academic learning.
