The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority blocked nearly 10 crore mobile devices during the financial year 2024–25, according to its annual performance report, as part of efforts to regulate the telecom sector and protect consumers. The blocked devices included approximately 868,000 lost or stolen mobile phones, around 7.2 crore fake or replica handsets, and nearly 2.7 crore devices found using cloned IMEI numbers.

The authority emphasized that these actions were carried out through the Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System, which has played a key role in strengthening the Mobile Device Management framework. The system has helped curb the circulation of counterfeit and illegally imported phones, improved consumer protection, formalized the mobile handset market, and contributed to higher government revenues.

The report also highlighted a major shift toward local production, with domestic manufacturing now accounting for more than 95 percent of mobile devices used in the country. A total of 36 production authorizations have been issued, reflecting growing industrial self-reliance and improved economic resilience within Pakistan’s mobile manufacturing sector.
