PTA Cracks Down on Illegal LoRaWAN Networks to Protect Pakistan’s IoT Ecosystem

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has launched a nationwide crackdown on illegal LoRaWAN networks, declaring all unlicensed LoRaWAN devices and operations unlawful. The initiative aims to protect Pakistan’s rapidly expanding Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem from potential security risks and operational disruptions.

According to PTA officials, enforcement teams are actively targeting companies and individuals involved in importing, selling, or using LoRaWAN equipment without proper authorization. During the ongoing operation, offices have been sealed, devices confiscated, and arrests made to curb unauthorized activities.

The authority warned that unapproved LoRaWAN technology can cause harmful interference in the national radio spectrum, potentially disrupting sensitive communication networks and affecting major digital projects. PTA stressed that only certified and legally licensed equipment should be used, as non-certified devices undermine compliance systems essential for national-level technology initiatives.

Public cooperation has been requested, with PTA advising citizens to avoid purchasing unlicensed LoRaWAN devices and to obtain equipment only from authorized sellers. The public is also encouraged to report any illegal LoRaWAN imports or installations.

LoRaWAN technology plays a key role in smart farming, industrial monitoring, smart metering, and vehicle tracking. While the technology offers significant benefits, PTA emphasized that using approved devices is crucial to ensure safety, regulatory compliance, and uninterrupted IoT operations across Pakistan.
