Two Pakistani Muslims have made history by being elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Cambridge, Massachusetts, reflecting the growing diversity and representation in local politics across the United States.
Sumbul Siddiqui, a Karachi-born lawyer, has been elected mayor for the 2026–27 term, marking her third time in office and reinforcing her distinction as the first Muslim and Asian woman to serve as mayor of Cambridge. Her re-election highlights continued public confidence in her leadership and commitment to inclusive governance.
Burhan Azim, an MIT-trained engineer originally from Burewala, has been elected deputy mayor, becoming the youngest city councillor in Cambridge’s history. Both leaders were first elected in 2017, and their latest victories are being widely celebrated as a significant milestone for Pakistani-American representation, diversity, and inclusion in American civic leadership.
