The streets of Karachi came alive with nostalgia as the 18th Annual Cross Country Vintage and Classic Car Rally began its journey, showcasing timeless automobiles from different eras. Organized by the Vintage and Classic Rally Drivers Association of Pakistan (VCRDAP), the event marks another chapter in the country’s growing passion for preserving automotive heritage. The rally, which started from Karachi, will travel through Sukkur, Multan, Lahore, Nurpur Noon, and Islamabad before concluding in Peshawar on October 29. This year’s lineup features beautifully restored vehicles, some dating back to 1960. Among the highlights are a 1960 Chevrolet Impala — the oldest car in the event — alongside other classics such as a 1963 Chevrolet Impala, 1972 Toyota Corona, 1977 Mercedes 240D, 1980 Mercedes 500SL, and 1986 Mercedes 300SEL. According to VCRDAP founder and president Imad Samad, the rally, first launched in November 2010, has become a signature national motoring event that promotes a positive image of Pakistan. He said that over the years, the rally has attracted enthusiasts from across the country, all united by their love for vintage automobiles. This year’s event also features a strong family and community element. Imad’s wife, Fozia Imad, is participating as a driver for the third time, steering a black 1977 Mercedes 240D, while her teammate Sabina Mansoor drives a red 1952 MG TD. Sabina’s husband, Capt. Mansoor ul Islam, complements the lineup with a green 1952 MG TD. Imad himself is driving a red 1960 Chevrolet Impala owned by his friend Rais Matloob Ahmed. Their 14-year-old daughter, Maryam, once the youngest participant at just six months old in 2011, is again joining the rally, alternating rides between her parents’ cars. VCRDAP Vice President Shoaib Qureshy, who also founded the Antique Cars Museum, emphasized that every participating vehicle has been meticulously maintained to ensure it can withstand the cross-country journey. He noted that the rally symbolizes both the passion and perseverance of Pakistan’s veteran drivers, adding that he is driving a 1980 Mercedes 500SL. As part of the itinerary, a Grand Classic Car Show will take place at the Pink Polo Festival in Lahore Polo Club on October 26, hosted by VCRDAP patron Adnan Hayat Noon. Around 30 additional cars are expected to join the rally from Lahore, including a 1976 Cadillac Eldorado, 1968 MGB GT, 1959 Austin Healey 3000, 1961 Jaguar Mark 10, 1965 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, 1972 Mercedes 300SEL, and a 1965 Ford Mustang. Following Lahore, the rally will make a scenic stop at the historic Nurpur Noon estate before heading to Islamabad, where participants will be hosted by Murree Brewery CEO and noted car collector Isphanyar Bhandara. The journey will conclude with a closing ceremony in Peshawar, organized by the local VCRDAP chapter. Participants have prepared for the changing weather along the route, packing warm clothes for the colder regions ahead. The rally not only celebrates classic motoring but also reflects a shared enthusiasm for heritage, craftsmanship, and the enduring spirit of Pakistan’s automotive community.
