Punjab has launched an innovative initiative under its Green Credit Program, offering citizens financial incentives to actively participate in reducing air pollution and improving environmental quality. Under this scheme, residents of the province can earn up to PKR 10,000 for contributing to smog reduction and sustainable practices.
The Environment Protection & Climate Change Department (EPA Punjab) aims to engage the public in tackling air pollution, which has become a significant concern in urban centers like Lahore, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala during winter months. Citizens can earn rewards by participating in activities such as planting trees, using eco-friendly fuels, promoting clean energy solutions, and reporting environmental violations.
EPA Punjab has made the process simple and transparent. Participants can register through a dedicated online portal, submit evidence of their green initiatives, and track their reward status. The program not only encourages community involvement but also raises awareness about climate change, air quality, and sustainable living.
Officials said the initiative aligns with the government’s broader climate and environmental goals, aiming to reduce smog levels, promote cleaner air, and foster a culture of environmental responsibility. By linking monetary incentives to ecological actions, the Green Credit Program seeks to motivate citizens to adopt long-term, sustainable habits while contributing directly to public health and urban environmental improvement.
This program represents one of the first large-scale attempts in Pakistan to financially reward citizens for tangible environmental actions, creating a model that could inspire similar initiatives across other provinces.
